GPL has reported a lack of spinning reserves in the Demerara, Berbice, and Essequibo regions, leaving the system vulnerable to total shutdowns. The current strain leaves little room for routine maintenance, as generators operate near maximum capacity.

To mitigate these risks, the government is reportedly negotiating with a Turkish firm to secure a third powership, potentially providing 300 MW of power using heavy fuel oil. Additionally, as the nation seeks alternatives to its centralized, overstretched grid, attention has turned toward the Swedish microgrid model. This approach, pioneered by companies like ViaEuropa, utilizes decentralized networks of solar power and battery storage to ensure that if one node fails, the rest of the network remains operational.
