Guyana officials address public sector management and US deportation deal

Guyanese Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo convened a meeting with ministers, permanent secretaries, and regional executive officers to address public sector management. The discussions focused on enhancing accountability and transparency, particularly regarding procurement transactions, government payment systems, and public information dissemination. Jagdeo emphasized the responsibility of officials to ensure compliance with laws and the efficient management of public resources, warning that breaches would lead to consequences.

Separately, opposition parties and the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) have expressed concerns regarding a deal with the United States. The agreement allows for up to 144 deportees to be sent to Guyana while their immigration cases are being processed. The opposition party We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) argued that this influx could strain the nation’s health, electricity, and security sectors. While the government stated that arriving individuals would be vetted and are not criminals, opposition leaders have called for greater transparency regarding the identity and status of these third-country nationals.
