Guyana partners with Apollo Health Systems for pediatric heart surgeries

Twenty-seven Guyanese children with congenital heart defects are scheduled to receive life-saving cardiac surgeries through a partnership between the Guyanese government and India’s Apollo Health Systems. The initiative aims to eliminate the national waiting list for specialized pediatric cardiac procedures by the first quarter of 2027.

The first phase of the program will see 17 children undergo surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation from September 28 to October 2. A second medical mission is planned for December to treat an additional 10 children. Apollo Health Systems is providing a team of specialists to work alongside local doctors to manage complex cases that exceed the scope of previous medical missions.

President Irfaan Ali stated that the program is designed to reduce the financial and logistical burdens on families who previously had to seek treatment overseas. The government will provide transportation and accommodation for children traveling from outside Georgetown to support the initiative.
