Guyana-India pediatric cardiac surgery partnership

Overview

The Guyanese government partnered with India’s Apollo Health Systems to address the national waiting list for pediatric cardiac surgeries for children with congenital heart defects.

Between September 28 and October 2, an 18-member team from Apollo Hospitals worked with local staff at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. During this period, specialists completed 16 procedures, including 10 complex open-heart surgeries, three catheter-based device closures, and three diagnostic catheterisations. The initiative is intended to provide complex care locally and allow Guyanese medical professionals to gain experience alongside international specialists.
