Guyana Power and Light initiates US$422M grid upgrade

Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is advancing a US$422.2 million programme to strengthen the nation’s electricity transmission and distribution network. A primary focus of the initiative is building redundancy into the grid to prevent outages during maintenance or equipment failure. By creating alternative pathways for power, the utility aims to ensure that if a transformer or transmission line trips, electricity continues to flow to consumers.

Key components of the upgrade include the commissioning of a 300-megawatt Goedverwagting substation and a new US$20 million National Control Centre. The control centre will provide enhanced oversight, allowing GPL to monitor electricity flows from generation through to the customer meter. The Goedverwagting substation will play a critical role in receiving power from the 300-megawatt Gas-to-Energy project at Wales and transmitting it across the interconnected system.

Additionally, work is progressing on new substations at Chateau Margot and Enmore, alongside the expansion of the Columbia substation. These projects are approximately 60 percent complete and are intended to strengthen the electricity supply along the East Coast corridor.
