Guyana President announces diaspora investment vehicle
President Irfaan Ali has announced a new investment vehicle designed to mobilize resources from the Guyanese diaspora. Speaking at a forum in New York, Ali stated that overseas citizens will soon be able to invest directly in major national industrial projects, such as fertilizer and gas bottling plants, with returns guaranteed by the government.
To support this economic integration, the government plans to digitize services through a single mobile application by early next year. This platform will include a personal digital vault for documents and a national payment system for remote banking and account settlements. Additionally, the administration has set a goal to build 40,000 homes over the next four years.
During his visit to the United States, Ali also addressed the Clinton Global Initiative, advocating for international partnerships to help small developing states overcome resource constraints in science and technology.
However, his visit also drew protests from the group We Invest in Nationhood (WIN). Protesters in Manhattan and Queens challenged the President to apply his international calls for justice and equality to domestic issues, including political persecution, corruption, and judicial independence.
