In Guyana, political tensions have emerged regarding the administration’s approach to international cooperation and national policy. Members of the APNU opposition declined to attend meetings convened by President Irfaan Ali, characterizing the consultations as “political theatre” intended to “rubber-stamp” executive decisions. The opposition demanded greater transparency and advance documentation, specifically concerning the Gas-to-Energy project and international financial obligations. President Ali responded to the opposition’s absence by labeling the decision “puerile” and proceeded with briefings on matters such as International Court of Justice proceedings and agreements with the United States. Concurrently, President Ali has been advocating for the importance of international partnerships to facilitate development in small nations. Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative, he argued that strategic alliances allow countries to access necessary technology and financing in sectors such as healthcare, energy, and food security. Expanding on these economic strategies, President Ali announced a new investment vehicle in New York designed to mobilize resources from the Guyanese diaspora. This initiative will allow overseas citizens to invest directly in national industrial projects, such as fertilizer and gas bottling plants, with government-guaranteed returns. To facilitate this, the administration plans to launch a mobile application by early next year featuring a digital document vault and a national payment system. The government has also set a target to construct 40,000 homes over the next four years. During his visit to the United States, the President also faced protests from the group We Invest in Nationhood (WIN). Protesters in Manhattan and Queens challenged Ali to apply his international calls for justice to domestic issues, including corruption, judicial independence, and political persecution. In subsequent remarks in Queens, President Ali described the diaspora initiative as a way to encourage participation in the country’s “second phase of transformation.”
