Guyana President proposes diaspora investment vehicle
President Irfaan Ali has announced plans to launch a special investment vehicle designed to mobilize capital from the Guyanese diaspora. Speaking at a gathering in Queens, New York, Ali identified specific opportunities for overseas investors, including a fertilizer project and a gas-bottling project. The government intends to offer what it describes as guaranteed returns to encourage participation in the country’s “second phase of transformation.”
During the event, Ali also presented an account of his administration’s economic progress, claiming the creation of 160,000 new jobs and the construction of over 5,000 kilometers of roads within the last five years. However, these figures have drawn scrutiny due to a lack of consistent national labor-market data to substantiate employment claims and questions regarding the actual condition of the road network.
While the government describes the initiative as a way to integrate overseas Guyanese into national industrial projects, specific details regarding ownership structures, return calculations, and the formal subscription process have not yet been released.
