Guyana seeks additional power generation amid rising demand

Guyana is facing increasing pressure to stabilize its national power grid as electricity demand rises and existing generation infrastructure requires urgent maintenance. Guyana Power and Light (GPL) chief executive Kesh Nandlall reported that several generating units require major overhauls, which could strain a system currently operating with a thin reserve. Peak demand has grown significantly, reaching approximately 255 MW compared to 125 MW in 2020.

To address the shortage, the government is reportedly negotiating with a Turkish firm to secure a third powership, potentially providing 300 MW of power using heavy fuel oil. This move aims to mitigate risks associated with delays in the Gas-to-Energy project, which is intended to provide more reliable and cheaper electricity but has struggled to meet its deadlines. GPL is also exploring smaller generating units and engaging with a Brazilian company for technical expertise and equipment to bolster immediate capacity.
