Guyana sees surge in aviation and tourism infrastructure

Guyana is experiencing significant growth in its tourism and aviation sectors. Passenger traffic at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has increased by over 400 percent in the last five years, reaching more than 700,000 passengers. This surge is attributed to expanded regional and international flight connections and rising interest from investors and tourists. To accommodate this growth, the government has allocated 3.2 billion Guyanese dollars (approximately 15 million USD) in the 2026 budget for the construction of a new terminal at CJIA.

Simultaneously, the country's hospitality capacity is expanding, with hotel rooms expected to reach nearly 6,000 by the end of 2026. International brands such as Hyatt, AC Hotels by Marriott, and Four Points by Sheraton are contributing to this development. This expansion aims to support the growing meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) market, as well as leisure travel. To support the industry, an Institute of Hotel and Tourism is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 to focus on workforce development and service quality.
