Guyana tourism and aviation infrastructure expansion

Guyana is undergoing significant expansion in its aviation and tourism infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger numbers. At the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), passenger traffic has increased by over 400 percent in the last five years, reaching more than 700,000 passengers.

To manage this growth, the government has allocated 3.2 billion Guyanese dollars in the 2026 budget toward the construction of a new 180,000-square-foot, three-storey Terminal Two. This facility, designed to reflect Guyana’s cultural identity, is being executed by BHM Construction Inc. in collaboration with Manchester Airport Group Ltd. and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. Other planned airport upgrades include a new air traffic control tower and an improved baggage-handling system.

Parallel developments in the hospitality sector include an expected increase in hotel capacity to nearly 6,000 rooms by the end of 2026, driven by international brands such as Hyatt and Marriott. Additionally, an Institute of Hotel and Tourism is slated for completion by the end of 2026 to support workforce development.
