Guyana to expand East Bank Berbice logging area by 5,000 acres
The Guyanese government plans to expand the land available to the local logging association on the East Bank Berbice by approximately 5,000 acres. Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat announced the initiative during a meeting with residents and loggers in Mara to address operational challenges and economic opportunities.
The association currently manages 8,500 acres. The proposed extension aims to accommodate a growing membership and increase access to forestry resources for local residents who depend on the sector for their livelihoods.
Before the expansion proceeds, the association must undergo reorganization and elect a new executive. The Guyana Forestry Commission is scheduled to meet with various small associations and the firewood association in Mara on September 27 to facilitate this restructuring process.
