Guyana national development and infrastructure expansion
Overview
Guyana is expanding its legal and physical infrastructure to support national development. Attorney General Anil Nandlall stated that the government is introducing new legislation to govern the oil and gas sectors, such as the Local Content Act and oil-spill regulations.
Judicial reforms are also underway, including the replacement of preliminary inquiries with a ‘paper committal’ process to improve efficiency. While the High Court backlog has been addressed, delays remain in the Court of Appeal.
Infrastructure development includes plans for a deepwater port and modern harbor facilities. Notable projects include the US$20 million Parika Modern Port and Waterfront Development Project, expected to be completed by 2028, and a study by the Bechtel Corporation for a proposed deepwater port in Berbice.
