Guyana tourism authorities launch food safety training for vendors

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), in collaboration with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), recently conducted a two-day Food Safety Prerequisites Training in Georgetown. The program engaged 27 participants, including 21 vendors who have previously participated in ‘Taste of Guyana’ events. The training focused on strengthening knowledge regarding food preparation, hygiene, handling, and service standards to support the country’s growing tourism and hospitality sectors.

This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to improve food safety, quality, and traceability. The Ministry of Agriculture has also been working with tourism stakeholders to establish direct market linkages between local farmers and the hospitality industry, aiming to increase the use of locally produced fruits and vegetables in hotels and restaurants.

President Irfaan Ali has emphasized the necessity of enhanced surveillance, monitoring, and testing systems to improve oversight of food products in supermarkets and markets across the nation.
