Gwalior temple tragedy: Truck crashes into devotees, killing up to 15

A paddy-laden truck caused a fatal accident near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, during the Navratri festival. Around 1:30 AM on a Saturday night, the vehicle lost control on a steep slope, breached police barricades, and crashed into a crowd of devotees and the temple's outer wall.

Reports indicate the death toll is between 12 and 15 people, including women and children, with dozens of others injured. Among the injured are two police officers who were on duty at the time. Several victims remain in critical condition.

In response to the tragedy, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial assistance of 400,000 rupees for the families of the deceased, 200,000 rupees for seriously injured victims, and 50,000 rupees for others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and announced ex-gratia compensation of 200,000 rupees for the next of kin of each deceased and 50,000 rupees for the injured.

Authorities have launched investigations into the incident. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is conducting a mechanical inspection of the truck to determine if technical failure was a factor. Additionally, police are investigating how the heavy vehicle bypassed security checkpoints and barricades on a route where such traffic is restricted. Following allegations of negligence, a City Superintendent of Police (CSP) was removed from his post and eight other police personnel were suspended.
