Fatal truck accidents in Gwalior

Overview

A series of fatal truck accidents has occurred in Gwalior, India. In late September, a speeding truck struck two students on a motorcycle near the Khurai Crossing, killing a 17-year-old and leaving another in critical condition.

In mid-October, a paddy-laden truck crashed into a crowd of devotees near the Sheetla Mata Temple during the Navratri festival. The accident occurred around 1:30 AM on a steep slope on Chhinor Road where heavy vehicles are restricted. The vehicle reportedly broke through police barricades and checkpoints, killing between 12 and 15 people—including women and children—and injuring approximately 39 to 42 others. The truck also struck the temple’s outer wall and gate, injuring two police personnel on duty, and damaged local shops. The impact caused the temple wall to collapse, trapping some individuals under debris.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial compensation: 400,000 rupees for the families of the deceased, 200,000 rupees for those seriously injured, and 50,000 rupees for other injured individuals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia of 200,000 rupees from the PMNRF for each deceased and 50,000 rupees for the injured.

Following allegations of negligence regarding how the vehicle bypassed the security perimeter, a City Superintendent of Police (CSP) was removed from his post and eight other police personnel were suspended. Investigations continue, with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) conducting a mechanical inspection to determine if technical failure or overloading contributed to the crash. The truck owner and driver have been arrested.
