Gyeonggi Province installs safety railings on three bridges
The Gyeonggi Provincial Construction Headquarters has completed the installation of enhanced safety railings on three bridges in Yangpyeong and Yeoju to prevent jumping and falling accidents. The project covered Yangpyeong Bridge, Yanggeun Bridge, and Ipo Bridge, with a total budget of 3.4 billion won (3.2 billion won in national funds and 200 million won in provincial funds).
The upgrades were implemented following a high volume of emergency reports at these locations. Between 2022 and September 2024, Yangpyeong Bridge recorded 127 reports of jumping or falling, while Yanggeun Bridge recorded 89. Ipo Bridge saw two reported incidents in 2025.
To physically deter such incidents, the existing railing height was increased from 110cm to 165cm. Additionally, rotating structures were installed at the top of the railings; these move when touched by hands or bodies, making it significantly more difficult for individuals to climb over or hold onto the railings during a crisis.
