Gyirong County flash floods cause mass evacuations and casualties
Flash floods and a landslide at Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, located in the Xizang Autonomous Region near the China-Nepal border, have resulted in significant casualties and mass evacuations. Authorities report that three people have died in the Chinese region, while 469 deaths have been reported in Nepal, with hundreds more missing across the border area.
Rescue operations have successfully evacuated 499 villagers and construction workers, along with 555 tourists, to safe areas and temporary shelters. Officials confirmed that no tourists remain stranded. To support the relief efforts, civil aviation services have transported 324 rescue workers and 24 tonnes of medical supplies, food, and emergency equipment to the disaster zone.
The floods have caused severe infrastructure damage, cutting off roads to the port and disrupting power and communication supplies. Emergency teams are currently working to restore essential services and manage the displaced population.
