Gynecological cancer experts emphasize early diagnosis and HPV vaccination
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alper Karalök, a gynecological oncology specialist at Liv Hospital Ulus, has emphasized the critical importance of early diagnosis and preventive measures in combating gynecological cancers, including cervical, uterine, ovarian, vulvar, and vaginal cancers.
Karalök noted that while not all symptoms indicate cancer, no symptom should be ignored. Key warning signs include abnormal vaginal bleeding—specifically between menstrual periods, after intercourse, or following menopause—as well as persistent pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating, unexplained weight changes, and alterations in bladder or bowel habits.
Regarding prevention, Karalök highlighted that most cervical cancers are linked to HPV infections. He stated that HPV vaccines play a vital role in reducing cancer risks for both men and women by protecting against cancer-causing HPV types. However, he cautioned that vaccination does not replace the need for regular screenings, describing them as two complementary approaches to preventive health.
