H1N1 influenza poses higher risks to elderly populations in India

A rise in H1N1 influenza cases, particularly in regions like Delhi, has prompted medical experts to issue guidance for high-risk groups. Older adults, specifically those aged 65 and above, face increased vulnerability to severe complications due to immunosenescence, a process where the immune system's ability to respond to infections declines with age.

To mitigate risks, doctors recommend annual vaccinations for adults over 60. Recommended options include trivalent and quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines, which help reduce the likelihood of severe disease, hospitalization, and complications such as pneumonia. Medical professionals suggest immunization around July, prior to the peak flu season.

Regarding treatment, experts emphasize the importance of early medical evaluation. For the antiviral medication oseltamivir to be most effective, it should ideally be administered within 48 hours of symptom onset. Early intervention can interfere with virus replication and reduce the risk of death and severe complications, especially in individuals with underlying conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
