Hacienda San Jacinto commemorates 170 years of Nicaraguan sovereignty

Nicaraguan state institutions and visitors are commemorating the 170th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, a pivotal historical event that took place on September 14, 1856. The battle saw patriotic forces, led by Colonel José Dolores Estrada and supported by the Matagalpa archer Indians, defend the hacienda against American filibuster forces.

Representatives from various government bodies, including the Supreme Electoral Council and the Comptroller General of the Republic, visited the Hacienda San Jacinto to lay floral offerings at the monument to General Estrada. Officials described the site as a “living temple of sovereignty and bravery” that symbolizes the nation's struggle for autonomy and self-determination.

The historic hacienda, located in Tipitapa near Managua, now serves as a museum. It features traditional adobe architecture and three dedicated halls that detail the causes and consequences of the war, the key protagonists such as Sergeant Andrés Castro, and national symbols.
