Broadway's Hadestown Removes Geno Segers Over Transphobic Posts

Actor Geno Segers was announced in late July 2026 to join the Broadway revival of Hadestown as Hades, with the new principal cast slated to begin performances on September 1 at New York’s Walter Kerr Theatre. Within days, theater blogs and social‑media users resurfaced videos in which Segers criticized transgender athletes and mocked pronoun usage, prompting a wave of online backlash.

The producers of Hadestown and Segers issued a joint statement in early August stating that they had “mutually agreed” he would no longer join the production and that additional casting would be announced shortly. Segers made his Instagram account private and removed the controversial videos from his YouTube channel. No official reason was given in the statement, though the controversy centered on his past anti‑transgender remarks.

Subsequently, the show announced that Broadway actor Ben Davis, known for his role in the Tony‑winning revival of Ragtime, would assume the role of Hades when the new cast opens.
