Hai Phong modernizes port infrastructure and maritime training

Hai Phong is advancing the modernization of its maritime infrastructure and human resource training to support Vietnam’s strategic goal of becoming a strong maritime nation. The Port of Hai Phong Joint Stock Company is transitioning toward a “smart, modern, green, and sustainable port system” by implementing technologies such as Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart Terminal Operating Systems (Smart TOS).

The Lach Huyen port area, specifically deep-water berths 3 and 4, has an annual capacity of 1.35 to 1.5 million TEUs. These facilities enable direct cargo transport from Vietnam to the US West Coast. According to the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), the Hai Phong port cluster ranked 13th globally for efficiency, while Lloyd’s List ranked it 29th among the top 100 container ports by throughput.

To support this industrial growth, the Vietnam Maritime University is working toward becoming a leading regional institution. The university aims to rank among the top five in ASEAN by 2030 and achieve international standing by 2045, focusing on high-quality maritime talent to meet the needs of the evolving logistics ecosystem.
