Hai Phong maritime infrastructure expansion

Overview

Hai Phong is expanding its maritime infrastructure to establish itself as a major international logistics hub in northern Vietnam. The development focuses on the Lach Huyen deep-water complex, which has grown from its initial two operational berths in 2018 to include six berths, including the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT) which became operational in 2025.

Recent activity highlights the port's capacity to handle massive vessels, such as the arrival of the Maersk-operated Matz Maersk. While the docking of this mega-ship demonstrated the port's growing importance, it also exposed critical infrastructure limitations, specifically regarding channel width and turning basin radius. These challenges have underscored an urgent need for further channel and berth upgrades to safely accommodate future mega-ship traffic and support the city's goal of creating a smart, green port ecosystem.

As of late 2026, the Hai Phong port system includes over 50 terminals and more than 14,000 meters of wharfage. The Port of Hai Phong Joint Stock Company is transitioning toward a “smart, modern, green, and sustainable port system” by implementing technologies such as Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart Terminal Operating Systems. The Lach Huyen area, specifically deep-water berths 3 and 4, maintains an annual capacity of 1.35 to 1.5 million TEUs, enabling direct cargo transport to the US West Coast.

Efficiency metrics reflect this growth; the Hai Phong port cluster ranked 13th globally in the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), while Lloyd’s List ranked it 29th among the top 100 container ports by throughput. To support this ecosystem, the Vietnam Maritime University is targeting a top-five ASEAN ranking by 2030 to provide high-quality maritime talent.
