Hai Phong police warn of VNeID identity theft scams
Police in Hai Phong, Vietnam, have issued warnings regarding fraudulent activities involving the VNeID electronic identification system. Scammers are impersonating local police officers to contact residents, claiming they need to update or verify electronic identification data for children. These criminals often use fake links, fraudulent applications, or request OTP codes to gain control of mobile devices and steal funds from bank accounts. To build trust, some suspects have even used video calls while wearing uniforms similar to those of the People's Public Security.
Authorities emphasize that registering for Level 2 VNeID accounts for children aged 6 to under 14 must be done in person at a police station. Citizens are advised not to follow instructions from strangers via phone, Zalo, or social media, and to never click on suspicious links or provide personal banking information.
Additionally, the Hai Phong Police Department of Administrative Management on Social Order has urged citizens aged 14 and older who have been issued electronic identification accounts but have not yet activated them to do so proactively through the official Ministry of Public Security app. Officials clarified that being issued an account is distinct from account activation, and residents should seek official police assistance if they encounter difficulties during the activation process.
