Vietnam fraud alerts: scams, deepfakes, apps & SMS threats
Entities: Vietnam Police · Thuận Hạnh commune, Lâm Đồng province · Cà Mau province · VssID app · Zalo
Overview
Police advisories in Vietnam continued through late July 2026, expanding earlier warnings on loan fraud, photo‑sharing privacy breaches, online sales scams, banking transfer errors and AI‑deep‑fake phone scams.
In early August, authorities in Phú Thọ and Gia Lai provinces cautioned citizens about a wave of SMS messages that claim a bank account suddenly holds a large balance or offers a “top‑up” reward. Criminal groups use leaked personal data to open counterfeit accounts, apply for online loans and launder money. Recipients are urged not to click unknown links, share identification documents or provide passwords.
Later in July, police in Thuận Hạnh (Lâm Đồng) warned that malicious apps masquerading as electronic social‑security cards are distributed via links ending in “.apk” or “.govvvn.com”. Once installed, the software can read OTP codes, harvest contacts and steal banking credentials. The public is advised to delete any such apps and download the official VssID app only from trusted stores. In Khánh Hưng (Cà Mau), officials highlighted image‑based scams on Zalo, Messenger, Telegram and other platforms, where fraudsters impersonate police or court officials and demand money, OTPs or app installations. Across the country, victims have lost amounts ranging from a few million to billions of dong.
All advisories stress verification through official channels, avoidance of advance payments, careful handling of personal data, and prompt reporting via police hotlines.
