Haiti calls for UN renewal of international anti-gang security force mandate
Haiti’s Foreign Ministry has called on the United Nations Security Council to renew the mandate of the internationally backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF). Foreign Minister Raina Forbin emphasized the need for the full deployment of the force to combat widespread gang violence, noting that the current mandate is set to expire on September 30.
Despite the call for action, GSF spokesperson Igor Rouquizá stated that the full deployment of the 5,500-member force is not expected to be completed before October at the earliest due to logistical constraints. While some personnel are already active in areas such as Tabarre, Cité Soleil, and Port-au-Prince, human rights advocates have expressed concern that the force's presence has not yet yielded tangible results in curbing violence.
The security crisis comes as Haiti prepares for general elections scheduled for December 13, the first in a decade. The country continues to face severe instability, with over one million people displaced and more than 1,400 people killed between April and June of this year.
