Haiti crisis requires local solutions and improved security, says OAS
The Organization of American States (OAS) has emphasized that solutions to the ongoing crisis in Haiti must originate from the Haitian government and its society. Alberto Föhrig, the OAS Special Representative for Haiti, stated that fundamental changes require a government with political legitimacy, which necessitates holding elections. However, he noted that conducting elections depends on improving security conditions to allow for public participation.
The OAS aims to support Haitian authorities in creating the necessary conditions for transparent and legitimate elections without replacing national institutions. International support should be directed by Haitian authorities to strengthen national capacity rather than defining the country's direction.
In a separate call regarding the multidimensional crisis, Dr. Grégory Beaugé, Vice-President of the Haitian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, urged national elites to adopt governance based on science, data, and expertise. He argued that while Haiti possesses significant intellectual talent, public policy often fails to prioritize reason and factual analysis over emotions and special interests.
