Haiti security crisis triggers military deployment and economic decline

Haiti is facing a deepening security and humanitarian crisis characterized by gang violence, military intervention, and economic instability. In Port-au-Prince, families displaced by armed gangs have staged protests, demanding financial assistance to return to their homes and improve their precarious living conditions in makeshift camps.

In response to an ambush on October 18 that left four Salvadoran aviation technicians missing, El Salvador has announced the deployment of over 2,000 soldiers to Haiti. This operation, coordinated with Haitian authorities, aims to locate the missing personnel and support security efforts against criminal gangs. Meanwhile, the United Nations has raised concerns regarding the Haitian government's use of foreign private security companies and mercenaries to manage border surveillance and customs revenue.

The instability is also severely impacting regional trade. In the Dominican Republic, merchants at the Mal Paso binational market report significant revenue losses due to decreased customer flow from Haiti. Additionally, reports indicate that Dominican traders are facing extortion by Haitian gangs, who demand weekly payments to allow the transport of goods across the border. These tensions have led to diplomatic friction, including the summoning of the Dominican ambassador by Haitian authorities.
