Haiti electoral council approves 15 political groupings for 2026 elections

Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has officially approved 15 political groupings, representing a total of 208 political parties, in preparation for the upcoming elections. Among the approved alliances are VIKTWA, which includes up to 52 parties, SOLÈY, Ayiti Transfòme, and PLATFÒM REKONSILYE. Three other registered groupings have until August 11, 2026, to regularize their status to receive approval.

However, the National Institute for the Defense of Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (INDDESC) has raised alarms regarding the potential for a post-election crisis. The organization cites significant hurdles to a credible vote scheduled for December 13, 2026, including widespread insecurity and the displacement of approximately 1.46 million people.

INDDESC warns that displaced populations may face exclusion due to difficulties accessing registration centers and the loss of identification documents. Additionally, the institute highlighted food insecurity affecting 5.83 million people and the potential influence of armed groups on voting freedom as major risks to the electoral process.
