Haiti 2026 election timeline and security concerns

Entities: Viv Ansanm · Haiti · Alix Didier Fils‑Aimé · Haiti Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) · Provisional Electoral Council (CEP)

Overview

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has confirmed that Haiti’s first round of presidential and legislative elections will take place on 13 December 2026, with a runoff on 21 February 2027 and final results expected by 7 March 2027. The schedule also includes a constitutional referendum and local elections, but its implementation depends on a stable security environment and adequate funding.

After parties and movements requested extensions, the CEP moved party registration to 31 July and coalition registration to 10‑14 August. More than 300 political parties have been approved, voter registration is under way, and electoral security agents have been trained.

The election timetable follows the postponement of an earlier August vote due to escalating gang violence. The armed alliance Viv Ansanm, designated a terrorist organization by the United States, now controls large parts of Port‑au‑Prince and has expanded into central and rural areas. Approximately 12 % of the population is displaced, living in makeshift camps or with host families, while food shortages, extortion, kidnappings and forced displacements threaten a free and fair vote. Regional bodies such as CARICOM have called for rapid deployment of the Force de Répression des Gangs (FRG) to improve security ahead of the polls.
