Haiti electoral process faces instability as KID party withdraws

The Konvansyon Inite Demokratik (KID) party has announced its temporary withdrawal from the ongoing electoral process in Haiti. In a letter sent to the Platfòm Rekonsilye on September 17, 2026, the party requested that its name and emblem no longer be associated with electoral activities. KID cited “improvisations” and “undemocratic and unfair maneuvers” as reasons for the decision, warning that the current direction could lead to national catastrophe rather than stability.

Simultaneously, the socio-political organization Konbit Leve Kanpe (KLK) has raised concerns regarding the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) procedures. KLK criticized requirements that force candidates from insecure areas to travel to specific departmental offices, potentially exposing them to physical danger. The organization also called for greater transparency and legal clarity regarding how candidate files are processed, specifically questioning the use of the phrase “under all reserves” in official documentation.

While the first round of elections is currently scheduled for December 13, the certainty of this date remains increasingly uncertain due to these political and procedural challenges.
