Haiti electoral process faces low voter registration and security concerns

Haiti's electoral process faces significant challenges as voter registration numbers remain low in several regions. In the Northeast department, only 7,500 voters have registered four weeks after the call for elections, with border cities like Ouanaminthe showing particularly low participation despite large populations.

Citizens have cited national insecurity and political uncertainty as primary reasons for the lack of engagement, suggesting that restoring safety should be a priority before holding votes. While some reports indicate an acceleration in registration in certain areas and the successful registration of 18 coalitions representing 236 political parties, gang activity continues to pose a major obstacle.

There is ongoing debate regarding the feasibility of holding elections across the entire national territory, as registration processes have not extended into municipalities controlled by gangs. The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) continues to manage the registration of voters across nine of the country's ten departments.
