Haiti gang violence spreads to Kenscoff, leaving 47 dead
The United Nations has warned that gang violence in Haiti is expanding into previously stable communities. A recent attack in the Kenscoff farming community, located in the hills overlooking Port-au-Prince, resulted in at least 47 deaths and more than 50 kidnappings. Reports indicate that 22 people were executed in a church where displaced residents had sought refuge.
According to the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), between April and June 2026, at least 1,408 people were killed and 656 were injured due to violence involving gangs, security operations, and vigilante groups. While overall casualties saw a 14 per cent decrease compared to the previous quarter, the UN noted that violence is shifting geographically as gangs are pushed out of metropolitan areas like Delmas and Tabarre into new territories.
A gang leader identified as Izo 2 has threatened to execute hostages if the Haitian National Police take action against gang members. The UN has called on Haitian authorities to ensure accountability for these attacks as a multinational gang suppression force continues to deploy in the country.
