Haiti faces escalating humanitarian crisis and mass displacement

Haiti is facing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by escalating gang violence and insecurity. According to UNICEF, internal displacement has reached 2.5 million people, including 750,000 children. Additionally, more than 2.8 million children require humanitarian assistance, and 5.8 million people are suffering from acute food insecurity.

The country's educational system is under significant strain. Reports indicate that over 1,600 schools were closed during the 2024-2025 academic year, affecting 240,000 students and 7,500 teachers. Furthermore, the Union des parents d’élèves progressistes haïtiens (UPEPH) reports that 70 public and private universities are currently closed due to the violence.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that offensive operations in densely populated residential areas risk further escalating violence and overwhelming the nation's already strained healthcare and prison systems. More than half of the Haitian population currently requires emergency humanitarian aid.
