Haiti officially launches 2026-2027 academic year

The 2026-2027 academic year has officially commenced in Haiti, marked by government ceremonies in Ennery and Delmas. At the launch in Ennery, Minister of Planning Sandra Paulemon, representing Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, emphasized the theme ‘Yon Lekòl Pou Tout Moun’ (A School for Everyone), advocating for inclusive and quality education as a foundation for political and economic stability.

In Delmas, Minister of National Education and Vocational Training Vijonet Déméro presided over ceremonies at Lycée Horatius Laventure. While the government has announced measures to support families, significant challenges remain. UNICEF representative Geetanjali Narayan highlighted the need for support systems for children affected by the ongoing national crisis.

Economic and security hurdles continue to threaten school attendance. Families face heavy financial burdens regarding supplies and transport, while many educational institutions remain in areas controlled by armed groups. Additionally, reports indicate a high risk of child recruitment by gangs, complicating the efforts to ensure a stable and safe return to the classroom.
