Haiti leaders demand security before holding elections

Former senator Nènel Cassy, head of the sociopolitical group LAVI, said on 1 August 2026 that Haiti should not enter a new political transition until security is restored nationwide. He urged the current authorities to assume responsibility, called for an inclusive dialogue with all political, economic and social actors, and invited veteran figures such as Jean‑Bertrand Aristide and Jocelerme Privert to unite behind a patriotic front for reconstruction.

Former prime minister Evans Paul echoed the security concern on 31 July 2026, stating that the conditions for credible, free and inclusive elections are not yet met. He warned that holding polls under pressure from the international community or in areas controlled by armed groups would deepen instability. Paul also highlighted the need for a clear constitutional framework and urged the government and the provisional electoral council to create the necessary guarantees before any vote can be organized.
