Haiti postpones 2026 general elections indefinitely
Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has indefinitely postponed the country's general elections, which were originally scheduled to begin with a first round on December 13, 2026. The decision suspends the start of political campaigns and the subsequent second round of voting, which had been set for February 21, 2027.
The postponement is driven by extreme insecurity and the control of armed gangs, who reportedly command over 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The CEP noted that current security conditions make it unfeasible to open polling stations or move staff safely into areas dominated by criminal groups.
While the election dates are suspended, the CEP has extended the deadline for candidate registration and the submission of documents until October 31, 2026. The council stated it is working to develop an updated electoral calendar and will release it as soon as possible.
Haiti has not held general elections since 2016. The nation has faced a prolonged institutional vacuum following the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, leaving the country without a functioning Parliament or a constitutionally elected president.
