Haiti Prime Minister confirms elections will occur this year

Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé has reaffirmed that national elections will take place this year, despite ongoing challenges posed by armed groups and a general national crisis. The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has scheduled the first round of presidential, legislative, and constitutional referendum elections for December 13.

The CEP announced that 17 political groups, representing 228 political parties, have been approved to contest the polls. To facilitate voter participation, 36 new registration centers have been added to the existing 29 operational centers in the West Department.

The electoral timeline includes a campaign period starting October 5. If required, a second round of presidential and legislative elections, along with local elections, is scheduled for February 21, 2027. This marks the first time the country will hold elections since 2016.
