Haiti prepares for December elections with OAS and CARICOM support

Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé met with high-level delegations from the Organization of American States (OAS) and CARICOM to discuss restoring state authority and preparing for general elections. The government aims to hold elections in mid-December, marking the first national vote since 2016.

To support this process, Japan and the OAS have signed an agreement to provide a $3 million grant to Haiti. This funding is intended to facilitate voter registration, update voter lists, and procure 350,000 blank identification cards. The grant also aims to improve services in rural areas and address the identification backlog caused by widespread displacement.

Amidst these efforts, the country faces significant security challenges, with gang violence displacing an estimated 1.5 million people. While international partners have reaffirmed their commitment to Haiti's stability and institutional strengthening, the ability to conduct a secure election remains a critical concern.
