Haiti security and election preparations demand urgent action

The Organization of American States (OAS) and former Haitian President Jocelerme Privert are calling for urgent action to improve security in Haiti to facilitate upcoming elections. Following an international mission involving the UN, Caricom, and the World Bank, the OAS emphasized that restoring a constitutionally elected government depends on a credible electoral process, which is currently hindered by instability.

The OAS has urged international partners to fulfill promises regarding personnel, equipment, and funding for the international security force. Key priorities include reclaiming territory from armed gangs, securing access to the international airport and seaport, and restoring safe connections to southern Haiti.

Simultaneously, Jocelerme Privert expressed deep concern over a surge in armed violence in regions such as Gressier and Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye. He noted that the displacement of entire communities due to gang attacks poses a direct threat to fundamental rights and the authority of the state, asserting that security is a fundamental prerequisite for any democratic process.
