Haiti seeks international security support and electoral reforms

Haiti is facing significant hurdles in its efforts to organize upcoming elections, centered on security, candidate eligibility, and data integrity. Foreign Minister Raina Forbin has called on African nations and the international community to bolster support for the country’s security and economic recovery. She specifically advocated for the renewal of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) mandate, which expires in late September, noting that only 450 of the planned 5,500 agents are currently deployed.

On the administrative front, the Organization of American States (OAS) has urged Haitian authorities to establish transparent criteria for candidate eligibility, particularly to prevent individuals with ties to illicit activities from running. The Venice Commission has been engaged to assist in drafting these guidelines.

Simultaneously, the National Identification Office (ONI) has raised alarms regarding electoral identity theft. Officials warned that some political parties may be using illegal tactics to reach the 30,000-member threshold required by the Electoral Code. The ONI has proposed allowing citizens to opt out of political affiliations to protect their personal data and prevent fraudulent registration.
