Haiti sets December 2026 election date amid security concerns
Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced that the first round of presidential and legislative elections will be held on 13 December 2026, with a runoff on 21 February 2027 and final results slated for 7 March 2027. Voters will also decide on constitutional amendments and local representatives. The council said the timetable depends on an acceptable security climate and the availability of funds. Over 300 political parties have been approved to contest the vote.
The schedule follows the postponement of an August vote due to escalating gang violence. The armed alliance Viv Ansanm, designated a terrorist organization by the United States, controls much of Port‑au‑Prince and has expanded into central and rural areas. About 12 % of Haiti’s population now live in makeshift camps or with host families, and chronic food shortages, extortion, kidnappings and forced displacements threaten a free and fair election. Regional bodies such as CARICOM have urged rapid deployment of the Force de Répression des Gangs (FRG) to improve security ahead of the polls.
