Haiti urges UN to renew Gang Suppression Force mandate

Haiti is urging the United Nations to renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) before its current term expires on September 30. Haitian Foreign Minister Jean-Victor Généus made the appeal as armed gangs continue to control large portions of Port-au-Prince and expand into rural areas, contributing to a humanitarian crisis involving nearly 1.5 million displaced persons.

As part of these international stabilization efforts, Sri Lankan peacekeepers have returned to the country. However, the deployment has faced scrutiny due to the lack of a formal vetting system to screen troops for past human rights violations or misconduct. Critics argue that the absence of such a framework poses risks to both the mission's credibility and the safety of Haitian civilians.
