Haiti violence: UN reports 1,408 deaths and surge in sexual assaults
A report from the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) reveals a severe escalation of violence across the country between April and June 2026. The agency documented at least 1,408 deaths and 656 injuries during this three-month period. While the total number of fatalities represents a 14% decrease compared to the previous quarter, officials warned that the reduction is not uniform across all regions.
Gang activity is a primary driver of the instability. More than half of the casualties are attributed to gang actions, while approximately 40% are linked to operations by Haitian security forces. Another 5% resulted from self-defense groups or popular violence. The report also noted 81 gang-related kidnappings.
Sexual violence has reached critical levels, with at least 796 victims of gang-related rape recorded. The victims include 772 women and 23 girls, with 87% of these cases involving gang rape. The West department accounted for 98% of these documented sexual assaults. These acts are reportedly used by gangs to punish populations and force displacement.
Geographically, violence is expanding beyond the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince into departments such as Artibonite and South-East. In the Cul-de-Sac area, violent clashes over territory and illicit resources have caused significant displacement, including over 18,000 residents fleeing conflict zones.
