Kenscoff massacre: Gang attack in Haiti kills 47 and kidnaps dozens
A violent gang attack in the Kenscoff community, located on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, has resulted in at least 47 deaths and more than 50 kidnappings. The assault, attributed to the Viv Ansanm criminal coalition, included the execution of at least 22 people within a church where they had sought refuge, and the burning of approximately 25 homes.
The massacre has triggered an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council and prompted the Haitian National Police to launch an immediate investigation. More than 2,600 residents have been displaced by the recent violence.
According to a report from the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), gang-related violence across the country left at least 1,408 people dead and 656 injured between April and June 2026. The report also highlighted a disturbing trend of systematic sexual violence, noting that 796 rapes linked to gangs were recorded in that same 90-day period. While overall fatalities showed a 14% decrease compared to the previous quarter, the violence is expanding from the capital into peripheral and rural communities.
