Haiti voter registration targets face demographic challenges
The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) in Haiti has set a target to register between three and four million voters for upcoming elections. However, data from the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) indicates there are approximately 7.4 million people aged 18 and older in the country. Even if the higher target of four million is met, it would only represent about 54% of the eligible voting population.
As of September 6, 2026, 506,953 voters had registered, accounting for 12.7% of the CEP's goal and 6.8% of the total adult population. The registration period began on July 20 and is scheduled to conclude on October 13. Challenges to the process include the requirement for specific documentation, the need to locate registration centers, and logistical difficulties caused by population displacement and dangerous travel conditions.
