Haitian business groups demand credible and secure elections

Major Haitian business organizations are demanding credible, inclusive, and secure elections, signaling a potential shift in their relationship with the current administration. In a joint statement released on September 22, the Association des industries d’Haïti (ADIH), the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie d’Haïti (CCIH), the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie haïtiano-canadienne (CCIHC), and the Institut Macaya called for a realistic and definitive electoral timeline.

The organizations emphasized that elections must not be a mere formality. They are calling for a technical and financial evaluation of the current electoral progress and the establishment of independent, transparent electoral institutions. Key requirements include effective mechanisms for resolving disputes and regular public updates regarding voter registration and election financing.

Security remains a primary concern. The business groups are urging Haitian authorities and international partners to accelerate the deployment of the Gang Repression Force (FRG) to ensure candidates can campaign and voters can participate freely, including displaced populations and those in hard-to-reach areas. Notably, the joint statement did not mention Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, which observers suggest may be a deliberate message to the government.
