Haiti gang violence escalates amid UN report on arms smuggling

Criminal gangs in Haiti continue to expand their territorial control and challenge state authority. A United Nations expert report reveals that despite an active embargo, gangs are successfully procuring weapons and ammunition through networks connecting the United States and the Dominican Republic. The report highlights that approximately 70% of cartridges seized from specific gangs showed characteristics matching stocks from the Haitian National Police.

In the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, coalitions such as Viv Ansam control nearly 90% of the territory, effectively performing state functions like collecting local taxes and regulating commerce. This gang dominance has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with the UN reporting at least 5,700 deaths or injuries since the start of 2026.

Security operations are also facing direct combat. The Gang Suppression Force (GSF) is currently investigating human remains found in Croix-des-Bouquets following an ambush on October 18, 2026, that targeted Salvadoran military technicians. While the GSF is conducting forensic analysis to identify the remains, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has formally disputed that the findings belong to his missing personnel.
