Haitian opposition leader calls for election postponement

Haitian opposition leader and human rights lawyer André Michel has called for the postponement of the country’s first round of elections, currently scheduled for December 13. Michel urged the government, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), and political parties to convene and revise the electoral calendar.

Michel argued that widespread insecurity and gang control over public squares, major roads, and key territories make credible and safe elections impossible under the current timeline. He noted that gang dominance would prevent the safe movement of voters, electoral staff, and necessary voting materials. The request follows recent outbreaks of violence, including a massacre in the Kenscoff metropolitan area that resulted in 40 deaths and dozens of injuries.

While various political leaders, human rights entities, and government members view the elections as essential to resolving the nation's crisis and establishing new authorities, concerns remain regarding the ability to conduct a secure vote amidst ongoing instability.
