Haiti prepares for first national elections in a decade

Haiti is preparing for its first national elections in a decade, tentatively scheduled for December 13, 2026. The process aims to elect a president and parliament but faces significant hurdles, including widespread gang violence, massive displacement, and weakened state institutions.

Because Haiti currently lacks a functioning Parliament to update electoral laws, the elections are being organized under a June 2 electoral decree issued by the executive branch and implemented by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). This decree introduces additional administrative, financial, and integrity requirements for presidential candidates beyond the basic qualifications established in the 1987 Constitution.

Minister Sandra Paulemon has called for the acceleration of election preparations and awareness campaigns. The new regulatory framework attempts to address concerns regarding corruption and political legitimacy within the country's current security and political landscape.
